Portraits of Dorian Gray

The Novel, by Oscar Wilde

Brilliant. Witty. Exquisite. Wonderfully written. One of my favourite novels so far.

The movie, 1976

A literal translation of the novel to a movie screen. And a good one, too.
But why bother to see the movie when the book plus our imagination are already doing such a marvellous work?

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, 2003

Seen as how this movie is but an excuse for special effects and a huge mass-murderer of literature adepts through painful heart-attacks, I will pass on the story (I know, I know, a what now?)
However, Stuart Townsend is quite gorgeous as a villain Dorian, so I watched it the same. I kinda hoped he would be ctrl+c ctrl+v into Harry Potter's godfather Sirius, but alas, nope.

The movie, 2009

An adaptation that ads content to the original story and a very interesting twist of redemption at the end.
The vision of the portrait as living is made very clear, even though the "monster noises" it makes are a bit too much. The quite graphic fall into pure hedonism and the following fight for redemption, the multiple evolutions of Dorian and his double-faced reactions are nicely handled.
Plus, it stars Ben Barnes as DG, which gives us such a great deal of pretty to look at. I know, casting a brunette as Dorian seems quite shocking, but just try a look into Ben's puppy eyes and let your indignation be melted away.
